Gaultier the sailor
“Gaultier the Sailor” is inspired by Pablo Picasso’s cubist self-portrait “Tête d'Homme au Maillot Rayé (Head of man in a striped shirt)” and “Le Marin (The Sailor).” Picasso was often photographed wearing the marinière, reflecting his love of the Mediterranean lifestyle he lived in France. The name in the title refers to Jean-Paul Gaultier, the fashion designer, for whom the striped shirt also became a signature look for him and an emblem of his Maison. Both artists represented, in their respective eras, a rebellious and relentlessly creative spirit, producing work that was often jarring and even shocking.
