This ain’t no party, this ain’t no disco (life during wartime)
36” x 48”. Acrylic and oil pastel on canvas.
The title of this canvas is from Talking Heads’ “Life During Wartime.” An excerpt:
Heard of a van that's loaded with weapons
Packed up and ready to go
Heard of some gravesites, out by the highway
A place where nobody knowsThe sound of gunfire, off in the distance
I'm getting used to it now
Lived in a brownstone, lived in a ghetto
I've lived all over this townThis ain't no party, this ain't no disco
This ain't no fooling around
No time for dancing, or lovey-dovey
I ain't got time for that now
The piece is from a series called “(Nothing but) Talking Heads,” inspired by the lyrics of the band.
The painting’s nearly monochromatic figure seems to be screaming, laughing, or talking at the same time, its emotional state pulled in many directions. The blue streaks around it evoke coolness while the abstract red background perhaps suggests a warning to be on high alert. The figure itself also hints at many personalities or identities during heightened emotional situations.
